After very extensive and careful consideration, F.C. Brisbane City, with the support of its funders and in consultation with the FFA, has made the strategic decision that it will delay its Hyundai A-League expansion bid.
As the current custodian of Brisbane City F.C. and Chair of the A-League expansion bid, I am required to make decisions that serve the best interest of the club whilst delivering outcomes that will ensure the clubs long term stability and success. The A-League is here to stay and FC Brisbane City looks forward to re-joining the elite tier of football in this country in the near future as our game further expands.
Brisbane City’s bid contains all of the crucial ingredients and technical pathways required for developing young footballers already in place and functioning. Brisbane City and its bid remain a capable differentiator and we will continue to play a crucial role as part of a rapidly growing football future in Australia.
We will continue working tirelessly with stakeholders to ensure that Brisbane City will form part of an expanded A-League in the near future and I remain highly confident our eventual A-League participation will become a reality. With the Queensland and Brisbane markets for football of an equivalent standing to the state of Victoria in terms of participation and interest, it leaves us one of the strongest yet underperforming football markets in the country. Everyone accepts that Brisbane is ready for a second team.
I would like to congratulate the Brisbane Roar for the opportunity to collaborate on ideas and solutions that we both believe provided the best Derby outcomes for the growth of the game and development of local footballers. We remain committed to this. I wish the Roar the very best for the season ahead.
I thank Greg O’Rourke and the FFA for their ongoing stewardship of the game, for the professionalism they have showed working with Brisbane City over the past few months and for providing the opportunity to demonstrate the credentials of Brisbane City and its powerful football story.
To the gladiators of Brisbane City F.C., whilst there may be disappointment, know that this journey has made us a stronger and more professional club. Our state of readiness, our recent growth and reach into the football and business community has set extraordinary new benchmarks. I thank the board, coaches and especially our footballers for sharing the ride, however let me be clear, it’s not time to get off just yet!
Finally, we wish all remaining expansion clubs the very best and City looks forward to celebrating the true strength of our game with the announcement of two new A-League clubs in the coming months.
Ongoing expansion of our league is crucial, let’s be bold! We have the biggest game in the country, it’s time for each of us who love it to stand up and celebrate that truth.
