The Brisbane City Football Club Goalkeeper Academy opened its doors in 2016 by appointing ex-professional Goalkeeper Billy Lumley to grow an Academy and give young Goalkeepers incredible opportunities and a pathway to becoming a professional Goalkeeper and fulfil their dreams.
Billy has played at professional level in the UK and Spain as well as working with the highest regarded Goalkeeper Coaches in the UK such as David Beasant, Tim Flowers, Martin Margetson, Bobby Mimms, Tim Ditmer and Perry Suckling. As well as being mentored by Ex-England Manager Glenn Hoddle.
Billy has developed a philosophy which he preaches day to day from the incredible knowledge he learnt from World-Class coaches over the years.
The Brisbane City Football Club Goalkeeper Academy started with just 20 Goalkeepers in various teams at BCFC and has now escalated to numerous school’s in Queensland’s south east, engagement with other clubs and various Goalkeepers achieving great success’s by playing for state teams and progressing to professional ranks.
During the start of the 2017 season, Macklen Freke was awarded a professional contract with Brisbane Roar football club and has since gone on to achieve international success by being called up to the u20 Australia squad. A big well done Macklen and to the coaching staff at Brisbane City Football Club.
Throughout the 2 seasons the BCFCGA has been operating, it has had an involvement with 7 out of the 8 selected Goalkeepers for under 13 and under 14 Queensland Metro teams for 2016 and 2017. A great achievement for all the boys selected and a credit to their hard-working attitude and desire to listen and learn from the coaching staff.
In 2017 the BCFCGA started a ‘Queensland first’ in a girls only Goalkeeper programs aptly named ‘She’s a Keeper’. With girl’s football growing at a rapid rate in Australia the BCFCGA felt that girls MUST be given an opportunity too to pursue a career as a professional Goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold coming on board to the coaching staff at the BCFCGA, Mackenzie worked with the Gold Coast Area of schools. A big well done to Mckenzie for here 2017/18 success with the W league Brisbane Roar team.
The Brisbane City Football Club Goalkeeper Academy hope to have another successful year in 2018, we are expanding into Girls schools in the SE QLD Region as well as giving regional Queensland Goalkeepers the best opportunity of becoming professional Goalkeepers by holding regional camps each school holidays.
Goalkeepers are the forgotten position and ‘an easy way out’ to blame. Please show your support and acknowledge every Goalkeeper for their hard work and passion with a simple “well done” or “great save” Putting a smile on a Goalkeepers face only aids development and helps the team.
